REVIEW: MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL (MICF2012): Kate McLennan - Homeward Bound

Written by Natasha Joyce

Families can be a rich vein to mine and if you know much about mining you'll know a vein can run deep and true or it can be fickle and disappear within metres. I know a thing or two about families (don’t we all?) and I know a bit about mining – I grew up with my family in Victorian gold mining country. Katie Mac, as she referred to herself throughout this affectionate ode to family, also comes from “the country” and her family mine is one filled with rich veins of ginger fluff sponges, silent uncles, suffering that you can see and wise aunty advice about the perils of cask wine. And doesn’t she mine that vein it for all it’s worth!

My classic Country Aunt Elsie was the queen of ginger fluff sponge cake and she’d tell you that the secret ingredient is preparation. Or she would if she was alive. I suspect she might argue with McLennan’s dad Pockets about the number of times sifting is required but it doesn’t really matter – the point is that McLennan herself clearly knows a thing or two about preparation. She is a consummate performer and story teller. Her characterizations of key family members are polished,  genuine and most importantly – funny. She sets up a joke and runs the line to it’s natural but not always expected conclusion. Enlisting comedian Celia Pacquola as director was a smart move – like a well made mojito, the whole show is sweet and refreshing with enough of a kick to keep you moving.

McLennan is worth her weight in ginger fluff sponge.

Chuckle Factor: 4.5
