REVIEW: MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL (MICF2012): Theatre Beating (NZ) - Constantinople @ Trades Hall

Written by Jessica Barlow

Constantinople

Theatre Beating's show Constantinople will win you over from the moment you are presented with your welcoming grape.

The vivid imaginations of two toga-clad men will guarantee your attention and unforced giggles throughout. Be prepared for skin coloured g-strings and plenty of skin. I’ll say no more.

As well as an astounding ability to turn sheets into props for just about any scenario, these guys know how to deliver ridiculous jokes, scenes and facial expressions with gusto.

Expect to learn about what happened to Constantinople in a series of bizarre scenes that are intricately tied together to make surprising sense.

The two performers personify a handful of diverse characters, and with seamless characterisation the transitions are clear. The simple use of various dress ties to symbolize the narrator speaking is a lovely touch. As the show progresses the ties get more and more ridiculous and such a tiny detail becomes a sweetly amusing indulgence.

One advantage of silly absurdist humour is that it provides the chance to take on taboo topics with relative confidence. Despite my initial skepticism when I realised they were going to pull a bomb joke, these guys totally nailed it. You will be laughing till their sheets fall off or you drop your grape - possibly both.

From air DJs to horse massage this show is a combination of topics one wouldn’t normally pair together. The final result is a smorgasbord of silliness that won’t escape your memory anytime soon

Mime, lip-synching, dance, imitation, double entendre and perfect timing with pre-recorded sound effects make this show absolutely unmissable. With clever word play there are always more things happening than what appears.

In Constantinople you’ll want to keep both eyes peeled and each ear open. Oh, one last tip – don’t eat the welcoming grape.

Chuckle Factor: 4.5/5
